About Hawk

Hawk was born on November 13, 2012, a healthy typical little bundle of joy. Katie tried to get pregnant for five years and Hawk was the product of their second round of IVF.  They were on cloud nine when God blessed the family with Hawk. At 3 weeks old, Hawk had a massive spontaneous brain hemorrhage that was discovered through a head CT after he started vomiting and having seizures. Life as they knew it halted and Hawk was life-flighted to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta Egleston.  He was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where he stayed for four weeks. Hawk was put into a pentobarbital coma for two weeks because the seizures would not stop. An enter-ventricular drain was placed in his brain and injected with tissue plasminogen activator to break down the clot and drain the blood. The blood created scar tissue, which lead to obstructive hydrocephalus and shunt placement.  It also created massive brain damage, which has resulted in seizures, shunted obstructive hydrocephalus, global developmental delays, and cortical vision impairment, along with many other issues.  Hawk currently has IS or Infantile Spasms/West Syndrome, one of the most catastrophic types of seizures.  Hawk was in the midst of a fight to overcome the brain injury and was showing progress, but when the IS started, he regressed significantly.  Hawk cannot visually track objects, sit, stand, talk, hold things, or eat enough by mouth for nourishment without a g-tube.  Hawk has tried both phenobarbital and Neurontin, which have failed.  Hawk is currently on Keppra, Topamax, the ketogenic diet, and Klonopin as an acute medicine to treat his seizures.  The diet has helped more than any type of medicine, but he is still seizing and has recently developed a new type of seizure.  Hawk takes other medicines as well, including Nexium for reflux, probiotic and Miralax for digestion, fish oil for brain health, multi-vitamin, and topical essential oils.  He gets physical, occupational, speech, vision and play therapy. Hawk loves the pool, his pets, his family and visiting with other children. He continues to get improve little each day.  His family is hopeful that Hawk can live a full and happy life, as long as he fights off the seizures continue to rob him of his hard work.  He is a happy and sweet boy and is deeply loved.  Any donation you give will go directly into an account set aside for Hawk and his medical and therapeutic needs.  Thank you so much for your generosity and support.  The family is overwhelmingly grateful.
